5 Ways Course Platforms Must Evolve

It's time for online courses to evolve. Here's my vision for 2027.

It's 2026, and not much has changed for online courses and learning management in quite some time. Most of the innovation has come in the form of AI, which is good on some level but more often than not has been used to justify price hikes.

I think we can do better. In 2027, I want to see the following:

1. Learner-Centric Course Experience

Content delivery is played out. Stale. Completely dated. No one wants to evolve it. They just do the same old left nav panel at 20% with the 80% right content panel. I'm not saying scrap it, I'm saying evolve it!

2. AI with Purpose

We are seeing a trend of course platforms shoving AI into their current interface as a blot-on rather than a deep part of the instructional design and presentation. Worse, these venture-backed companies then raise prices. In 2027, let's see a shift where AI is โ€œsilentโ€, yet powerful in improving learner outcomes.

3. Ending โ€œFrankensteinโ€ Platforms

No more LMSs that try to do everything under the e-learning umbrella. It's lazy business, and it's the boardroom's way of squeezing more money out of you.

4. No More User-based pricing

It's 2026, not 2008. Tech advancements make this an archaic pricing metric. Just another way to extract as much money from you as possible.

5. Connection-Oriented Support

This one seems counterintuitive to today's AI advancements, but I'm calling on LMS and online course software to get back to โ€œhuman-firstโ€. Use AI, yes, but don't hide behind it. Teaching is inherently about human connection. The platforms in the space need to be as well.

This is the baseline scorecard I'll use to grade every online course/LMS tool out there in 2027. The tools that start tackling these areas now will be in a great spot going into the next 3-5 years.
